Beaver Lake Loop is a 9.4-mile loop trail in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This trail offers a little bit of everything, including lush forests, serene rivers, stunning sandstone rock formations, and breathtaking Lake Superior shoreline.
We hiked this trail during the third week of May. Daytime temperatures were moderate, but it got quite cold overnight. Thankfully, we didn’t encounter any issues with bugs due to the time of year. However, during the summer months, this area can be thick with both mosquitoes and black flies, so you will need to plan accordingly to manage the bugs.
Our Backpacking Experience
We tackled this trail as part of a backpacking trip. Our plan was to hike the Beaver Lake Loop on day one and then complete the Chapel Loop trail on day two. To add some variety, we slightly altered the standard route by continuing along the North Country Trail and following the Lake Superior shoreline to reach our camp at Coves Campsite.
Backpacking Permits and Regulations
Backpacking campsites in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore require a permit, which you can obtain through Recreation.gov. It’s important to camp only in your designated campsite as per park regulations. Additionally, pets are not allowed in backcountry campsites or on the North Country Trail. If you plan to explore this trail, you’ll need to leave your pets at home.
