Jenny Lake is a 7.5-mile hike leading to a picturesque mountain lake in the Flathead National Forest. The trail follows the Dorris Creek trail, climbing to a serene lake nestled beneath Blaine Mountain. Unlike the busier trails in Glacier National Park, this route offers a more secluded hiking experience, making it a great option if you’re looking to escape the crowds.
Our Experience
We hiked this trail in early October, carrying our fishing gear. The path was rocky but well-maintained. As you ascend, the views to the east are truly breathtaking.
The lake itself features rocky shores and the stunning, crystal-clear bluish-green water that defines this region. We enjoyed fishing and caught some small trout. I’d love to return and attempt a scramble to the top of Blaine Mountain—maybe even bring backpacking gear to spend the night at the lake.
Wildlife
Although we didn’t see any wildlife during our hike, this is grizzly bear country. Be sure to carry a bear deterrent, such as bear spray, and keep it easily accessible. For more information on bear safety, check out our article, Staying Safe: Tools for Hiking in Grizzly Bear Country.
Getting There
The trailhead is accessible via Forest Service Road 895A, which connects to the West Side Road of Hungry Horse Reservoir. While the road is unpaved, it’s in decent condition, and a high-clearance vehicle is not necessary to reach the trailhead.
Pets
This is a pet-friendly trail, so feel free to bring your dog. While leashes are not required, I highly recommend keeping your dog leashed to avoid potential encounters with wildlife, other dogs, or hikers.
Final Thoughts
Jenny Lake is a peaceful mountain hike, offering a quieter alternative to the crowded trails of Glacier National Park. The hike provides rewarding views and a beautiful destination at the lake. If you’re looking for a scenic and less-traveled trail in the Flathead National Forest, I highly recommend adding this one to your list.
