Mosquito Falls and Chapel Falls via Chapel Loop is a 10.2-mile loop trail in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This trail features stunning rock formations, picturesque waterfalls, serene rivers, and the breathtaking Lake Superior shoreline that this area is famous for.

We hiked this trail during the third week of May. Daytime temperatures were moderate, but it got quite cold overnight. Fortunately, we didn’t encounter any issues with bugs at this time of year. However, during the summer months, the area can be thick with mosquitoes and black flies, so it’s essential to plan accordingly to manage the bugs.

Trail Highlights

Some of the most notable highlights along the trail include Chapel Falls, Chapel Rock, Chapel Beach, Miners Castle, and Mosquito Beach. The waters of Lake Superior, with their vibrant turquoise color, look almost tropical. Don’t be fooled, though—the water stays very cold year-round.

On Day 2, we tackled the Mosquito Falls and Chapel Falls trail via Chapel Loop. While most people day hike this trail, we integrated it into our backpacking trip.
