Trekking Wild

If you love camping or spending time outdoors, you know how relaxing sitting by a campfire can be. When camping in the Western United States you will encounter many areas with fire bans for a large part of the year. A portable propane fire pit is one way to enjoy a fire during times traditional campfires aren’t allowed.

The Ignik Fire Can is a portable propane fire pit designed to bring the warmth and ambiance of a campfire without the hassle of gathering wood or dealing with smoke. In this review, we’ll explore the pros and cons of this product to help you decide if it’s right for your adventures.

Pros

Quality Construction

I have several Ignik products, and one thing they all have in common is quality. The Ignik Fire Can stands out for its durable design. Built with a sturdy steel frame and powder-coated finish, it’s resistant to rust and wear, ensuring longevity even in rugged outdoor environments. The construction feels solid, and the included latch system keeps the lid secure during transport. It’s clear that Ignik put thought into creating a product that could withstand frequent use and travel. After a year and a half of use, my Ignik Fire Can looks as good today as when I first bought it.

Compact Size

One of the more appealing features of the Ignik Fire Can is its compact and portable design. Shaped like an ammunition can, it measures just 11.5 x 6.5 x 9 inches, making it easy to stow in your vehicle or RV. At around 11 pounds, it’s lightweight enough to carry without hassle. This portability is perfect for car campers, overlanders, RVers, and tailgaters who want a convenient fire solution without taking up too much storage space.

Functionality

The Fire Can is easy to use. Simply unfold the legs, connect it to a propane tank, open the valve, and ignite the flame with the push of a button. It’s compatible with standard propane tanks as well as the smaller 1 lb bottles (requires an adapter). Ignik has a number of portable propane tank options. You may consider pairing one of their tanks with this fire pit. I have their 5 lb tank and travel case that I have been using with this fire pit.

The adjustable flame control allows you to customize the fire’s intensity, making it suitable for various settings—whether you’re looking for maximum warmth or just enjoying the ambiance. Additionally, the design includes mesh sides, allowing for 360-degree heat dispersion and a pleasant viewing experience. I purchased the optional lava rocks to help retain more heat and create a more natural flame experience.

Cons

Small Flame

While the Fire Can is convenient, its flame size is modest compared to traditional wood-burning campfires or even newer propane fire pit competitors. The flame height is limited, which can detract from the overall campfire feel and the amount of heat it puts out. If you’re looking for a roaring fire to gather around, this product might fall short of your expectations.

Low Heat Output

Another downside is the relatively low heat output. The Fire Can is designed more for ambiance than for providing significant warmth. On chilly nights, you’ll need to sit close to the unit to feel its heat. This limitation might make it less appealing for those who rely on a fire pit for warmth while camping.

I have the standard Ignik Fire Can, which puts out 38,000 BTUs of heat. They now have an elite version that puts out over 50,000 BTUs. I haven’t used the elite version yet, but my guess is that it will still not be a lot of heat. For comparison, the Lava Box, an ammo can-style competitor, puts out 280,000 BTUs. I think there are better options out there if heat is your primary concern.

Lava Rocks are Sold Separately

The lava rocks help hold in some additional warmth and bend the flames, giving it a more natural campfire look. The lava rocks are an additional $25. Seems strange that they are not included as part of the product.

Final Thoughts

The Ignik Fire Can is a portable propane fire pit that excels in convenience and build quality. Its compact size and easy functionality make it a decent option for times when a traditional fire pit is not allowed. However, its small flame and low heat output may not satisfy those seeking a traditional campfire experience.

If I was buying a propane fire pit today, I would look at alternatives to the Ignik Fire Can. It just doesn’t put out enough heat or a large enough flame for more than one person to enjoy. There are better options available to spend your money on.
